Supply list for Plein air painting

PLEIN AIR PAINTING SUPPLY LIST: (Click on links in blue below for more info on supplies)

I buy most of my supplies online at:

www.asw.com, www.Jerry's Artarama.com or www.Dick Blick.com).

Portable easel or Pochade box with tripod for working outside (I use the 9x12" Open box M or the 6x8" Guerilla box by Judson plein air outfitters. I mount them on a $35 Wall mart camera tripod). I sometimes also use the Jullian half box easel. Here is a link to an extensive review of several pochade boxes and outdoor painting gear options from the popular lines and colors blog: Pochade Boxes.

Pallet (Wood, glass.)

Paint. Please spend the extra to get professional grade oil paints. I mostly use Winsor & Newton, Gamblin, Grumbacher and Utrecht but there are many good options.)

Winsor and Newton under painting white (*Click here for Underpainting White at ASW).

Titanium White

Yellow Ochre

Cadmium Yellow or Cad Yellow medium

Alizeran Crimson

Cadmium Red or Cad Red medium or deep

Ultramarine Blue

Cobalt Blue or Cerulean Blue

Burnt Sienna

Greenish Umber, Olive Green or Terra Vert

Viridian

Canvas: canvas or canvas mounted on board or gessoed wood panel (sizes can range from 6x8” to 14x18” but I would not go larger). (* The best way to learn to paint Plein air is to work small and do lots of them, I would recommend you to get a bunch of 6x8" and 8x10").

Brushes: Assortment of bristle brushes, I suggest large, medium and small in two styles: Flats and Filberts. (I use Robert Simmons Signet). (*Click here for Robert Simmons Signet brushes at ASW).

One or two Royal sable Langnickel series 5590 flats in medium and large sizes for blending and softening edges. A size number 10 is nice. (*Click here for the series 5590 Royal Sable Langnickel flat).
